Give Them A Second Life Project
An estimated 640,000 tons of books are sent to the landfill annually. At an assumed average weight of 4 pounds each that equates to approximately 320 million books that are discarded each year and not being recycled.
Data compiled by the Union Ministry of Commerce showed India's waste paper import at 3.5 million tonnes for the period between April and September 2018 compared to 1.5 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
Through this project, we are trying provide students with notebooks and textbooks that people no longer want or are planning to discard.
We call it the 'Give Them A Second Life' project as we are trying to reuse the books and notebooks that are no longer wanted and give them a second life before giving them up for recycling.
Through this project we will conduct donation drives and collect used textbooks and half used notebooks and storybooks which we will then compile and give to underprivileged students.
This project not only provides students with study material but also works towards reducing wastage thus, protecting the environment
CHAPTER 1: PRESTIGE GREENWOODS, SAMANTHA CASTLE AND ROHAN VASANTHA
Our first donation drive under 'Give Them A Second Life' took place over the course of 3 days. It was conducted in 3 different apartments; Prestige Greenwoods, Samantha Castle and Rohan Vasantha, and in the end, we raised over 300 kgs of books and newspapers. We also received multiple unused notebooks which we provided to the students of Shishu Mandir a non profit organization/school present in the city. We had also received stationery that we gave away to children in slums.
We also conducted multiple fundraisers alongside our donation drives where we collected over ₹5,000. We also received a generous donation of ₹11,000 from Ms. Amita Varshney which we used for sponsoring a student's entire education. We also received a donation from Ms. Barkha Chaurasia and her family who provided us with multiple new stationary items and food which we used for conducting our summer camp.
